My name is Joe Whitney and I am a part of a generational farming family from Wisconsin. I was raised on a small Red Angus beef farm, where we mainly grew alfalfa using conventional farming methods for our cattle.
Horticulture became an interest in my early 20’s after college when I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and began working as a community organizer meeting individuals who desperately wanted more access to healthier food choices.
In the years leading up to the formation of Air Joe Farms LLC I studied and practiced various hydroponic methods growing many different plants and ultimately settled on aeroponics. This is a form of hydroponic where no substrate is needed and the roots simply hang in air.
My driving motivation was to develop a system that is based on efficiency. Using aeroponics I am able to take advantage of many benefits including vertical space, which allows me to maximize my production in a given space.
The Evolution of Farming
Growing up on a farm I never envisioned a future that involved farming. I got to witness first hand the amount of work and dedication it took to be successful. I got to see first hand how easy it was to fail. I got to see that you could do every perfect and mother nature might have her own agenda. Both my parents were educators and farmers, which most would think that’s like having two full time jobs this seems to be the norm in our family. In the Whitney household we rarely use the term rest. Our family more commonly uses words like build, raise, prepare, improve, create, grow, and explore.
Air Joe Farms LLC exists because of the hard work and dedication that was instilled from my family. My family has had a treasons impact on the way I look at the world and has a big role in my pursuit of the constant improvement of myself and the world. The company I often call a pandemic project because the initial construction started when the pandemic hit and the world shut down. I vividly remember saying to myself, “Well, I am not going to just sit around and do nothing.” So I did what any Whitney would do, I got to work.
Aeroponic Horticulture
